Online Petition Wants Lupita Nyong'o to Join the X-Men
What started as a post-Oscars joke on social media about Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o has turned into a campaign to see the actress become a superhero -- much to Halle Berry’s potential distress.
Inspired by a post on "girl geek" site The Mary Sue, Jamie Broadnax, who goes by the name BlackGirlNerds on Twitter, took to the social network last week to announce: “I volunteer as tribute to lead a social media charge to get Lupita cast as Storm!” Turns out, she wasn’t alone in that desire, as the 151 retweets and 166 favoritings of the tweet revealed.
Broadnax took that as a sign to follow through on her threat, and created an online petition to ask Fox and Marvel to consider Nyong’o as the weather-controlling member of the X-Men. “She has the accent, the look and the acting chops to play Storm as the comic book intended,” the petition explains.
While that’s arguably true, the fact remains that there already is a cinematic version of Storm, courtesy of Halle Berry. Admittedly, the First Class flashback conceit allows for the casting of a younger Storm, so it’s not impossible that this petition could achieve its aim -- as long as someone works out a way to explain how Nyong’o managed to become Berry as she got older.
The petition remains active at Change.org.
