'Rogue One' Composer Reveals What He's Most Excited for Fans to Hear
Michael Giacchino is in the midst of one of the biggest jobs a composer can have — scoring a Star Wars movie.
"It is a little stressful but it is a lot of fun," the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story composer told Heat Vision at the premiere of Doctor Strange last week.
Giacchino is laboring away as the standalone film's Dec. 16 release approaches, going as far as working through his birthday.
"I didn't want to go to work that day, but I had to because our schedule was so tight," said Giacchino. "So I go and sit down and turn on the screen to work and all of these Stormtroopers are running around and I thought to myself, 'All right this is not a bad birthday.' "
Joining the Star Wars universe has given Giacchino quite the sandbox to play in, but there's one character whose theme he's most excited for fans to hear.
"I love the main character. I love Jyn and what they have done with her," he said of Felicity Jones' rebel.
Giacchino not only replaced Alexandre Desplat after reshoots saw him to drop out because of scheduling — he's also making history as the first composer to score a Star Wars live action film other than iconic composer John Williams, who is slated for Star Wars: Episode VIII.
"John and I have known each other for a while and he's always been a great giver of wisdom," Giacchino said of Williams. "He is a great teacher, even when he is not directly teaching you. Growing up listening to him — he was one of my biggest indirect teachers. Working on this films I am constantly reminded that it was Star Wars that pushed me in this direction."
