'Sons of Anarchy' Director Tackling Pierre Hotel Robbery with '6 Bullets From Now' (Exclusive)

Stephen Kay, known for helming gritty material such as TV's Sons of Anarchy and The Shield, has signed on to direct 6 Bullets From Now, an indie heist thriller being produced by 13th Sign Pictures and Blue Collar Productions.

6 Bullets is based on the infamous true story of the Pierre Hotel robbery that occurred in New York City on New Year’s Day 1972, in which five tuxedoed gunmen stole millions in cash and jewels. It is considered the largest hotel robbery in history.

The script, written by Christian Darren, centers on a man whose life spirals out of control as he masterminds the perfect heist of the hotel vault.

“I was a kid in Jersey in the '70s” said Kay, who directed the Sylvester Stallone movie Get Carter before segueing to television where he worked on episodes of Friday Night Lights and Covert Affairs as well as Anarchy and Shield. “This was the biggest jewel heist in the history of New York at the time.  I loved that era and the films of the late '60s and '70s shaped who I am, what I like, and the films I want to make.  You could say that 6 Bullets is a love letter to the New York of my childhood.”

13th Sign principals Tommy Alastra and Joe Mundo will produce with Blue Collar’s Mark Rowen and Julie Rowen.

“We fell for the idea of making an authentic '70s heist film,” said Alastra. “With today’s technology we can create a look and feel that will take the audience right back to the days of Dog Day Afternoon and Serpico.”

The producers are heading into the casting stage and are eyeing a late summer production start in New York.

13th Sign is relatively new to the narrative film scene although it has chalked up numerous documentary credits. The company recently produced the doc Sunset Strip which debuted at last year’s South by Southwest Film Festival. They are also developing and financing the conspiracy thriller Dallas in Wonderland.

Alastra and Mundo hope that their development and production shingle acts as what they call a collaborative home for filmmakers.
