Sony Pictures Entertainment, New Regency and Ubisoft are teaming up to adapt Ubisoft’s video game Watch Dogs to the big screen.

The announcement was made at GamesCom. The game will be hitting shelves this holiday season for Sony’s PlayStation 4 console.

"The themes and open gameplay of Watch Dogs lends itself perfectly to the big screen,” said Columbia Pictures’ president of production, Hannah Minghella. “The game has intense action and adventure, but the story focuses on information and the control of information, which we think will lead to an exciting thriller.”

The game centers on a hacker who, intent on revenge, breaks into Chicago’s Central Operating System, and gains control of the city’s infrastructure, including security cameras, traffic lights, and public transportation, plus databases containing information on the city’s residents. Then he turns the city into his weapon.

The game has garnered plenty of acclaim in the last few years, earning best of show at E3 2012. IGN bestowed three awards, including biggest surprise, best new franchise and best PC game.

At Columbia, Minghella and Sam Dickerman will oversee development while Alexandra Milchan and Andrew Calof shepherd for New Regency.

At Ubisoft, Watch Dogs will be overseen by its screen division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures.
