'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' Soundtrack Enjoys Deluxe Re-Release

Composer Michael Giacchino may have gone back to Alexander Courage’s iconic 1966 theme for his score to the 2009 reboot Star Trek, but Trek fans remain loyal to virtually all iterations of the franchise’s music. And with good reason: When creator Gene Roddenberry rebooted the show with Star Trek: The Next Generation, he combined Courage’s work with that of Jerry Goldsmith, who composed the score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, melding two eras of Trek mythology as he created a third.

As director J.J. Abrams gears up for Star Trek 2, which is scheduled for release in 2013, La-La Land Records has released a limited-edition, three-disc set celebrating Goldsmith’s incredible work for Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Featuring not only a remastered version of the original score, which was previously available on LP and CD, the set includes alternate takes, rejected cues Goldsmith created for the film and bonus material that includes jazz musician Bob James’ disco version of the score and Shaun Cassidy’s vocal version of the love them, “A Star Beyond Time.”

For several years, La-La Land Records has been a destination for fans of film and television scores from all different genres. The company’s output includes music from works as diverse as Blazing Saddles, Commando, Friday the 13th: Parts I-VI, Millenium and Taking Woodstock. Extensive liner notes that include interviews, expert commentaries and behind-the-scenes information about the creation and legacy of these celebrated works accompany each release.

With a run of only 10,000 copies, the Star Trek: The Motion Picture set has already sold more than half of its entire run, further making the release a collector’s item. Three other Goldsmith releases, Stagecoach/The Loner, Rio Lobo and Warning Shot were released at the same time, and are currently available for purchase.
