Do 'Transformers 5' Trailers Include 'Star Wars' Easter Eggs?

Why is the Empire striking back in the latest movie about robots in disguise?
'Transformers: The Last Knight'

For those who can't wait until December's Star Wars: The Last Jedi to see TIE Bombers and Imperial Scout Walkers in action once again, here's some good news: Judging by recent trailers for Transformers: The Last Knight, they'll be on the big screen again this summer … in a galaxy much closer than usual, somehow.

The two-legged gun robot that appears in the international trailer for Michael Bay's next (and supposedly final) Transformers movie (skip to the 0:22 mark) does have plausible deniability for potential Star Wars-esque origin, admittedly. With its relatively flat "head," it also closely resembles ED-209 from the Robocop franchise, so an argument could be made for it upholding a sci-fi movie tradition.

However, the shot at 0:42 of a subsequent trailer is far less ambiguous. Those things flying in the sky? Those are very, very clearly "influenced" by the TIE Bombers from the original Star Wars trilogy. Indeed, with the exception of an additional fold on the wings, they appear almost identical, at least from the brief glimpse in the trailer.

Is this a tribute from Bay to the ultimate genre movie franchise on its 40th anniversary, a stealth attempt to audition for a Star Wars movie of his own, or the most unexpected plot twist of the entire Transformers franchise? The truth is likely to remain a secret — like so much of the plot of The Last Knight — until June 20, when the movie hits theaters. For now, just marvel at the fact that there appear to just as many TIE Bombers in a Transformers trailer than in the first teaser for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
