'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Officially Gets PG-13 Rating
The Force will be with those accompanied by an adult, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens being given a PG-13 rating weeks ahead of its Dec. 18 release.
PG-13 is the default rating for mainstream blockbusters, with this year's Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Furious 7 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 all receiving that rating. In total, eight of the year's top 10 movies are rated PG-13.
The reason for the rating from the MPAA is "sci-fi action violence," which seems entirely appropriate, all things considered; the rating itself shouldn't come as a surprise, with the last live-action Star Wars movie, 2005's Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith also receiving the same rating, for "sci-fi violence and some intense images."
All other Star Wars movies have been rated PG; the PG-13 rating was only created in 1984, following the release of the original Star Wars trilogy.
