Google Starts Recruiting Jedi and Sith Ahead of New 'Star Wars' Film
There's been an awakening ... at Google.
Ahead of next month's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Google is offering users the chance to choose the Light Side or the Dark Side of the Force, with the decision impacting the Google suite of products from Google Maps to YouTube, with Gmail, Chrome and other Google offerings in between.
"When we first heard about Episode VII, we started thinking about what a Google tribute to these epic stories might look like: 'Wouldn't it be cool if there was some sort of Star Wars thingy in Search? The Millennium Falcon in Cardboard would be sweet! What if Google Translate could decipher galactic languages?' ... and on and on and on," Google vp product management Clay Bavor wrote in an introductory blogpost about the promotional campaign. "As this list of ideas grew, so too did the band of passionate engineers and product folks who wanted to build them."
More Star Wars-centric features will be added through the Dec. 18 release of The Force Awakens, including a virtual reality Star Wars experience developed by Lucasfilm, Google and Verizon and "a few easter eggs," according to Bavor. The Star Wars-centric material — which differs depending on whether the Light or Dark Side is chosen, so pick wisely — will be available until February.
