'Star Wars' Tweaked Darth Vader Scene Sparks Outcry
George Lucas continues to make tweaks to Star Wars, and fans continue to be upset about it.
Such was the case Thursday when it was revealed that Lucas has added audio to Darth Vader in a scene in Return of the Jedi where he commits his final redemptive act by throwing the evil Emperor Palpatine down a shaft. In the original version, Vader was silent, but now he cries out "No!" reflecting the end of Revenge of the Sith. (Watch the altered scene below.) Sith is the third film in the overall chronology but the last one to be released.
Other changes include swapping out the puppet Yoda in The Phantom Menace for a CGI-created creature, having the Ewoks blink in Return of the Jedi and adding a shriek to Obi-Wan Kenobi in A New Hope.
After Lucas confirmed the changes, fans took to Twitter to express their frustration, mostly related to the Darth Vadar alteration. Among the tweets:
Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof:
I wonder if the [Lost] finale will be better appreciated if we have Vincent [the dog] shout "NOOOOOOOOO!" over the final shot.
Actor-comedian Paul Scheer:
If George Lucas continues to change Star Wars at this rate in the year 2028 it will just become Spaceballs.
All right, with MORE research, I come to the conclusion the changes in the STAR WARS blu-ray are absurd...
STOP TINKERING WITH THE ORIGINAL STAR WARS MOVIES!!!!!!
Hi my name is Sarah Strickler, & I'm one of those nerds who is angered by the changes being made in the Star Wars blu-ray pack...#nerdrage
'This saga keeps getting worse all the time' - Lando on the Star Wars Blurays
For the re-release of my Star Wars posters I'm going to digitally insert Jar Jar binks into Jedi and replace Fett with Nien Nunb in Empire.
I will never buy nor recommend the Blu-Ray version of Star Wars to anyone after seeing this. [with a link to the tweaked scene]
Kinda glad I bought myself the original Star Wars trilogy in VHS before George Lucas starting mucking about with my memories.
Blogger Manic Moviegoer:
Because George Lucas apparently thinks he hasn't ruined Star Wars completely...
Hopefully I'll live long enough to see Star Wars getting rebooted/remade someday... by J.J. Abrams. #makeithappen
"I am altering your childhood memories. Pray I don't alter them any further." —George Lucas, Admiral of the Star (Wars) Destroyer
I imagine most of George Lucas' statements about Star Wars begins with, 'Wouldn't it be neat if…?'
Still, there were others who, if they didn't outright defend Lucas, at least made light of fans' reactions.
Calm down, nerds. If we can have 10 versions of the Bible we can have a couple different versions of Star Wars.
They put in changes in every Star Wars release purely so that 1000s of fan-rage blogposts can be written to drum up even more word of mouth.
Their is talk of boycotting the Star Wars Blu-ray because of the new audio. That's mean, you guys. George Lucas totally needs the money.
I'm not boycotting the Star Wars Blu-Rays because they're altered, I'm boycotting them because the awful movies.
Just asking. When was the last time Star Wars fans were actually happy???
am i actually agreeing with ALL the new changes to star wars??????? now if he would take jarjar binks out of phantom menace nerdlife is complete :)
