Gary Scott Thompson, the writer of the original Vin Diesel-Paul Walker Fast and Furious, is going deep into Thailand’s underground prison fighting world with Champion, a project just set up with Storyscape Entertainment and Pioneer Pictures.

Storyscape’s Bob Cooper and Richard Saperstein will produce the action-thriller with Robert Kravis and Karl Herrmann of Pioneer.

According to the producers, Thompson based his original screenplay on real events, exploring a centuries-old tradition within Thailand's prison system where inmates compete in state-sanctioned Muay Thai tournaments to win early release.

Champion follows the journey of an American locked up abroad who must learn Muay Thai in order to fight for his freedom.

Tyler Mitchell, who developed the project while working with Cooper at Landscape Entertainment, will also produce.

Cooper and Saperstein’s Storyscape Entertainment, which last year signed a first-look feature deal with Broad Green Pictures, has several projects in development across town. Among them are Stealing Time at Dreamworks with Colin Trevorrow producing and The War Magician at StudioCanal with Benedict Cumberbatch starring and producing.

Kravis and Herrmann are also producing Titan, a biopic on John D. Rockefeller Sr. and the Standard Oil Company, based on the best-selling biography by Ron Chernow.

Thompson also worked on Paul Verhoeven’s Hollow Man and created Las Vegas, the TV series that starred Josh Duhamel and James Caan.
