U.K. Indie Asian Comedy 'Amar Akbar & Tony' Gears Up
Martin Delaney, Rez Kempton and Sam Vincenti sign on to star in writer/director Atul Malhotra's big-screen debut.
LONDON -- Martin Delaney (Zero Dark Thirty), Rez Kempton (TV's Spooks) and Sam Vincenti (TV's Waking The Dead) are among the cast signed to star in U.K. indie comedy drama Amar Akbar & Tony.
A nod to the 1970s Bollywood classic Amar Akbar Anthony, the project marks the big screen debut for writer/director Atul Malhotra.
Malhotra is a well-established U.K. TV program director and producer whose resume boasts Breaking Magic, which airs across Discovery Channel International.
It is billed as a coming of age drama set to shoot in the British capital from May 4 and will be produced by Victoria Wood (Svengali, Queens Of The Cage) for Sash Media Productions, U.K.
It details the story of three characters struggling through life in multicultural London.
It also stars Laura Aikman (Keith Lemon: The Movie), actress and singer-songwriter Karen David (The Scorpion King 2-Rise of a Warrior) and Goldy Nota, who is perhaps best known for her work in Gurinder Chadha’s It’s A Wonderful Afterlife and Sex And The City 2.
The movie's backers also said cameo appearances are lined up for Meera Syal (TV's Goodness Gracious Me), Ace Bhatti (TV's EastEnders) and Nina Wadia (Doctor Who) alongside Amrita Acharia whose resume includes an outing in Game Of Thrones.
Malhotra said his aim is to portray on film, "the self-assuredness and determination of the multicultural youth of today."
Added Malhotra: "There have been so many portrayals of Asian people wanting to escape from their cultural heritage, but I wanted to explore the contrasting angle. The film will embrace the vibrancy and distinctiveness of this influential culture and will wear its Asian heart proudly on its sleeve."
