Universal's Halloween Horror Nights to Include 'The Purge: Anarchy' Scarezone
The microbudget horror series returns to the theme park's annual Halloween event alongside attractions based on "The Walking Dead," "From Dusk Till Dawn" and "Face Off."
The Purge is returning to Universal Studios' Halloween Horror Nights.
The second installment in the microbudget horror franchise, The Purge: Anarchy, will be the theme of a "Scare Zone" at Universal Studios Hollywood and the Universal Orlando Resort's annual Halloween event. Areas at both parks will be transformed into streets from the series in which the United States government legalizes all crime for a 12-hour "purge."
This is the second year in which The Purge has been a part of Halloween Horror Nights, with The Purge: Survive The Night among last year's Scare Zones. The series was also adapted into a traveling show, The Purge: Breakout, that toured the country from May through July.
This year's Halloween Horror Nights, which runs select nights from Sept. 19-Nov. 1, will include mazes based on AMC's zombie hit The Walking Dead and Robert Rodriguez's El Rey TV series From Dusk Till Dawn. It will feature a Scare Zone based on Syfy's Face Off, with other mazes and scarezones yet to be revealed. Unlike the event's mazes, scarezones are open areas where guests can run freely amid park performers and set pieces.
"Halloween Horror Nights is about taking guests out of their comfort zones and placing them at the core of unimaginable horror," the event's executive producer John Murdy said in a statement. "Because the premise of The Purge could theoretically happen, our Scare Zone elevates that sense of fear and forces you to really watch your back."
The Purge: Anarchy was released July 18, earning $28.4 million in its first weekend in theaters, the top opening for a horror film this year (though not as big of an opening-weekend total as its predecessor's $34.1 million). The franchise's producer, Jason Blum, recently signed his production company Blumhouse to a 10-year multiplatform deal with NBCUniversal.
