Publishers and fans of Judge Dredd launch online push to try and get a sequel to last year's ill-fated movie adaptation starring Karl Urban.

"Dredd"

On the face of it, a sequel to last year's Dredd -- the second attempt to bring long-lasting British comic character Judge Dredd to the big screen, with Star Trek's Karl Urban in the title role -- doesn't seem like something that's likely to happen anytime soon. After all, the movie, which cost $50 million to make, only took in $35 million around the world, with only $13 million of that coming from the U.S. Such is not the thing that sequels are made from, traditionally.

That's not stopping those behind the movie from hoping otherwise, however. At Comic-Con this weekend, Urban told fans that he hoped strong DVD and Blu-ray sales could encourage Lionsgate to greenlight a sequel, saying that "the more people that campaign for it, the more people that email, Twitter and write into Lionsgate and say 'we want to see more of this,' then the more likelihood that we'll get to see that."

Apparently, that pushed Rebellion, owners of Dredd and the anthology he appears in, 2000AD, into action. They've launched an online campaign focused around a Facebook page and petition -- "the only OFFICIAL petition," it explains -- to try and force the issue.

According to Rebellion, more than 10,000 people have signed the petition to date, with more than 30,000 people "liking" the Facebook page. All we need now is for those 30,000 to convince all of their family and friends to buy tickets to a potential Dredd sequel and we might be in business.
