Warwick Davis Returns to 'Star Wars' for 2015's 'Episode VII'
Star Wars: Episode VII has added another familiar face to the cast, with the announcement Thursday that Warwick Davis — who played Wicket the Ewok in 1983’s Star Wars: Return of the Jedi — will be appearing in J.J. Abrams' franchise revival.
The announcement was made in a video that appeared on YouTube under the official Star Wars account, unsubtly titled “Will Warwick Davis Appear in Star Wars: Episode VII?” (If the answer was "no," that would have been a very cruel trick to play on the fans.) In the video, Davies and arguably the most unconvincing fake beard in the history of moving pictures joke about the amount of waiting the actor has suffered through waiting to be invited back to a galaxy far, far away:
Despite his iconic Return of the Jedi role, it's unknown whether Davis will return as everyone's favorite Ewok in the new movie; in addition to playing Wicket in Return of the Jedi and two made-for-TV spin-offs (1984's The Ewok Adventure and 1985's Ewoks: The Battle for Endor), he also appeared in 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace as Wald, a friend of the young Anakin Skywalker. Earlier this year, he said that, if he did appear in the new movie, he’d want to play a villain.
Could it be too much to hope for Episode VII to reveal an older, bitter Wicket who has become the first Sith Ewok in the intervening years since we last saw him? …Okay, it probably is. We'll find out for sure when Star Wars: Episode VII is released in December 2015.
