Watch the Many, Many Deaths of 'Star Wars' in Under Three Minutes
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a lot of people died. Like, a lot of people.
Despite its title, you don’t really think of Star Wars as a particularly violent series of movies. A new video from Digg might change that, counting up the number of onscreen deaths in the original trilogy, and it’s surprisingly high: 2,005,645,868, to be exact.
Admittedly, much of that is estimated. (The video thanks the Star Wars Wikia for the suggested body counts for the destruction of Alderaan in the original movie, which immediately added 2,000,000,000 to the total, for example). It does, however, underscore just how many characters meet their end in the movie. The number of Stormtroopers alone is surprising; somewhere, someone is wondering whether Clone Genocide would be a suitable alternate title for the series.
Of course, watching the video it does feel like the stakes are raised for Star Wars: Episode VII now. J.J. Abrams, it looks like you’re going to have kill a lot of people …
