The first image of Kodi Smit-McPhee as the blue-skinned teleporting X-Man known as Nightcrawler has been released, giving fans a chance to compare the new-look of the fuzzy elf with his comic book incarnation. Spoilers: He looks pretty spot-on.

Smit-McPhee's Nightcrawler was released with the comment "BAMF! Guess who?" on Instagram by the actor, referring to the sound-effect the character makes when teleporting in the comic books. The new incarnation is certainly very faithful to the original, with only one exception: his eyes have pupils, instead of the blank bright-yellow gaze of artist Dave Cockrum's original 1970s design.

He also seems to be lacking the mysterious scars that marked the face of Alan Cumming's version of the character, when he appeared in 2003's X2: X-Men United.

Smit-McPhee's new-look Nightcrawler will be one of many new mutants to appear in next year's X-Men: Apocalypse, Bryan Singer's follow-up to 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. Also set to debut are Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Jubilee (newcomer Lana Condor) and new versions of Storm, Jean Grey and Cyclops (Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner and Tye Sheridan, respectively).

X-Men: Apocalypse will be released May 26, 2016.

Singer, who wrote on Twitter "Catch him before he’s gone.…" deleted the Instagram post, as did Smit-McPhee, who had also shared a photo. Below is the image, courtesy of 20th Century Fox's Twitter account, which tweeted it after the director and star deleted their posts.
