Zhang Yimou's 'The Great Wall' Adds Andy Lau, More Chinese Actors
Director Zhang Yimou has rounded out the cast of his upcoming film The Great Wall with several notable Chinese stars. Andy Lau, Jing Tian, Zhang Hanyu, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Lin Gengxin, Zheng Kai, Chen Xuedong, Huang Xuan and Wang Junkai have all joined the film, which will star Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal and Willem Dafoe.
The Legendary fantasy film, which is being touted as the largest film ever shot entirely in China for global distribution, centers on an elite force making a last stand for humanity on the iconic Great Wall in China. Production is set to begin in China at the end of March.
The Legendary Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment production will be produced by Thomas Tull, Charles Roven, Jon Jashni and Peter Loehr. Jillian Share, Alex Gartner, Bennett Walsh, La Peikang and Zhang Zhao will executive produce with Er Yong, Alex Hedlund and Eric Hedayat co-producing.
Universal has dated the film for release in 3D on Friday, Nov. 23, 2016, with the Chinese market opening during the 2016 holiday season.
Andy Lau is considered one of Asia's biggest stars, appearing in more than 150 films since the mid-1980s, including Infernal Affairs and House of Flying Daggers. Jing Tian has recently starred alongside Jackie Chan in New Police Story and Donnie Yen in Special ID. Zhang Hanyu recently starred in Taking Tiger Mountain, which earned over $120 million at the Chinese box office this past December. Action star Eddie Peng has recently starred in Fleet of Time and Rise of the Legend. Lu Han is a former member of the Korean pop band EXO and starred in the January 2015 film Miss Granny. Lin Gengxin starred in Taking Tiger Mountain. Zheng Kai has recently starred in the Chinese films Fleet of Time and The Running Man. Chen Xuedong is the star of the film series Tiny Times. Huang Xuan recently starred in The Golden Era and Blind Massage. Wang Junkai, a member of the pop sensation TF BOYS, is making his film debut.
