The Media Development Authority of Singapore said Korean director Pil Gam-Sung's "Neon Sign" will be the first film out of the gate from its film fund launched in Cannes this year.

The movie sees MDA partner with Korea's CJ Entertainment and Beijing-based Polybona Film Distribution on the project.

Gam-Sung's picture will be produced by Singapore's Bang Prods. and Korea's Nabi Pictures.

Set in China's Yunnan province, the comedy road movie centers on an arrogant Korean pop idol who flees to China to escape paparazzi following scandals at home.

The project marks Singapore's second film co-production with Korea. The first, "Host 2" from Singapore's Boku Films and Korea's Chungeorahm Films, is being sold here during AFM.

MDA CEO Christopher Chia said the tri-nation cooperation represents "growing synergies between Asian countries and our abilities to tell Asian stories concerning universal topics such as music and culture in a unique way for an international audience."

CJ entertainment vp Joon Choi said: "We believe that this film will indubitably make a mark as a successful Singapore-China-Korea co-production case."

Nabi Pictures producer Min-whan Jo said: "With his Chinese-Korean background, we believe Pil's cultural and creative sensibilities will capture the essence of the Neon Sign story perfectly."

Bang Singapore's Keiko Bang said the project was symbolic of alliances "which signify the emergence of a new paradigm shift in the way that Asian media projects will be financed, produced and distributed in the future."

Jeffrey Chan, CEO of Distribution Workshop and Group COO of Bona International Film Group said: "We've been looking for opportunities to work with CJ Entertainment and MDA for some time, and 'Neon Sign' has nicely pulled together the strengths and resources of all the parties as a showcase for pan-Asian coproduction and co-operation."

The level of investment from MDA will be subject to cast and resulting overall budget.
