Pusan to build three studios
$24 mil investment to be completed by 2013

SEOUL -- Three indoor movie studios worth 28 billion won ($24 million) will be built in Pusan by 2013 for filming, in addition to the two existing ones near the Busan Yachting Center.
The news about the construction has added weight, since the city has been working to actively secure world-class editing facilities for its post-production labs and veteran manpower to attract foreign film production.
Marketing itself as “the hub of Asian cinema,” Busan Film Commission, the country’s first regional commission, has been aggressively advertising in the last few years their “Busan Incentives” -- a cash discount of up to 30% for film companies who work with the commission, and other benefits for location searches.
The new studios, designed as a three-story edifice, will house a complete support facility for filmmaking, including a costume warehouse, art studios and make-up rooms.
Busan spent 32 billion won to build a new digital post facility in Centum City, the city’s new center near Haeundae, earlier this year, complete with equipments for Digital Intermediate, editing, CG and sound mixing. Films including Bong Joon-ho's "Mother" and Park Chan-wook's "Thirst" were edited in the studio.
The commission has also been targeting the Chinese market. Films including Beijing-based Huayi Brothers’ “Tracing Shadows” and “Sophie's Revenge,” a co-pro between Zhang Ziyi and CJ Entertainment were done in Busan, and the commission is currently negotiating with Tsui Hark for the post work of the director's new film “Di Renjie” based on the Chinese folk hero.
“We want to focus on high-profile Chinese blockbusters, and gradually expand our clients to North American market,” said Lee Yong-ki, the president of AZ Works, the post-production facility run by the commission. “It’s a major merit [for the Chinese clients] that the facility at Pusan offers high-quality visual effects and post-production services rivaling Hollywood with cheaper cost and faster speed.”
