BEJIING -- Hong Kong and Hollywood star Chow Yun-fat will co-star with Chinese actor Ge You in a film for the first time when he joins the action comedy "Let the Bullets Fly," by  Chinese director Jiang Wen, Emperor Motion Pictures said Wednesday.

Chow will play a "cruel but visionary" gang leader in the early days after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, EMP said in a statement. He recently worked on Mikael Håfström's Hollywood production of the 1940s wartime thriller "Shanghai," due out in 2010, and starred in the title role of a biopic on Chinese philosopher Confucius.

Ge, a perennial boxoffice favorite in China, starred in the 2008 hit "If You Are the One," by director Feng Xiaogang.

Chow joins Ge and Chinese actor-director Jiang Wen a few weeks into shooting the $18 million project outside Beijing.

The "Bullets" script was finished earlier this week after nine drafts, EMP said.

Producer Ma Ke said Chow was the only actor for the part and that he had expressed early interest and reserved the second half of 2009 for the filming.  "It was a matter of working out the script to everyone’s satisfaction. We’re very happy that [Chow's] finally on board," Ma said in the statement from EMP.

"Bullets" is a co-production between Hong Kong-based EMP and director Jiang's Beijing-based company, Buyilehu Films. The two worked together on Jiang's last full length feature, the 2007 Venice International Film Festival nominee "The Sun Also Rises."

The film is slated for a fall 2010 release.
