NEW DELHI -- Mumbai-based broadcaster Zee Entertainment Enterprises appointed a new CEO on Tuesday, naming Punit Goenka to replace Pradeep Guha, with immediate effect.

Goenka, 31, is the son of Zee founder Subhash Chandra Goel and was earlier head of Network Operations.

The outgoing Guha joined Zee 3 1/2 years ago after a three-decade stint at leading Mumbai-based media group Bennett Coleman, whose assets include the Times of India newspaper, FM radio stations, film, music and other entertainment properties.

Under Guha's tenure, Zee overtook rival channels Star Plus and Sony Entertainment Television with hits such as the musical talent show "Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa," among others.

Guha plans to expand his own venture, Culture Company, founded five years ago, which has produced two films, "Fiza" and "Tehzeeb."

Zee was founded by Goel in 1992 as an independent partner Hindi channel of the newly launched Star TV network. Zee and Star TV parted ways in 1995 following Star's acquisition by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. from Hong Kong promoters Hutchison Whampoa Group.
