TOKYO -- TV stations are considering displaying a “this is an analog broadcast” message across all television programs on non-digital channels from July to encourage viewers to update to the new technology before the final switchover in 2011.

“We are considering a number of initiatives, including broadcasting the ‘analog’ message across programs,” said Masukazu Honda, a spokesperson for pubcaster NHK.

Fewer than a third of Japanese households have so far made the digital switch, although this is expected to rise in the run-up to the Beijing Olympics.
