By Patrick Frater
HONG KONG -- Joseph Skrzynski, a venture capitalist and media luminary, has been appointed chairman of Special Broadcasting Service, Australia's public sector radio and TV broadcaster.

Appointed to SBS's board earlier this year by the Rudd government, Skrzynski will now take up his new five-year posting from Dec 17. The appointment was announced by the minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, senator Stephen Conroy.

"I am sure that Mr. Skrzynski will provide strong leadership and continue to help SBS meet the needs of an ever-changing and culturally diverse audience," Conroy said.

A Polish refugee who arrived during WWII, Skrzynski's role in Australia's media scene includes stints as chairman of the Sydney Opera House Trust and the Broadcasting Council, acting chairman of the Major Organisations Fund of the Australia Council, board positions with the Sydney Film School, the Australian Film, Television and Radio School and the Australian Film Commission.
