'Hunger' wins at Cinemanila
Malaysian films sweep South East Asia competition

HONG KONG -- British prison drama "Hunger" won the Lino Brocka Grand Prize at the Philippines' Cinemanila festival which wrapped on Sunday.

The film is the feature debut by video director Steve McQueen. The jury's prize went to "Tulpan," the Kazakh film that has been collecting awards all year on the international festival circuit.

In the separate South East Asia competition, Malaysian films made a clean sweep. Top prize went to the late Yasmin Ahmad's "Talentime," while a special mention was made for "Woman on Fire Looks for Water," by Woo Ming Jin. The best SE Asian short was discerned as "Focla Point" by Alizera Khatami and Ali Seiffouri.

In Digital Lokal, the festival's section for Filipino films the Lino Brocka Grand Prize went to Christopher Gozum’s “Anacbanua.”

The Cinemanila festival (Oct. 15-25) played 80 films from 30 countries and included a master class by Paul Schrader and the bestowing of an Indie Spirit award on Filipino filmmaker Lav Diaz, among its off-screen highlights.
