Cannes to celebrate Europe Day

April 24, 2008 European Commissioner Viviane Reding will join festival president Gilles Jacob and delegate director Thierry Fremaux in welcoming the Ministers of Culture and Audiovisual from across the European Union. The theme of this year's event is "Cinema, Dianying Yan, Kino, Chalchitra, Cine: building a world of exchange," which translates the word "cinema" into the languages of Europe, Asia and Latin America to symbolize "the willingness of exchange based on respect and diversity," the European Commission said. Organizers hope the event will spur more local initiatives on the part of European distributors in third world countries from theatrical distribution in theaters to film schools or audiovisual training programs.
