Helio warms up to mobile users

Dec 12, 2007, ET

NEW YORK -- Mobile virtual network operator Helio is launching a YouTube page Wednesday which will allow mobile users access to community features on the site for the first time, the company said.

Helio's page is the first mobile-specific version of the Google-owned video-sharing site that will allow users to log in and access their accounts. This will enable rating and commenting on videos and access to other community features.

In addition, the Helio page, which will be available on the MVNO's Ocean device, will allow users to record and upload videos to YouTube. It will also enable use of the Helio's global positioning system capabilities.

YouTube launched its mobile page earlier this year. The standard mobile site, m.youtube.com, doesn't have community features, though.

Helio, which operates on the Sprint network, opened in May 2006 with a deal in place with News Corp.'s MySpace, similar to the agreement announced Wednesday with YouTube.

An MVNO is a service that uses a cellular phone's network to deliver content to a subscriber base, rather than an add-on to an existing service.

Helio is a joint venture between South Korea's SK Telecom and Earthlink.
