TORONTO – The U.S.-based video-sharing Web site YouTube on Tuesday launched a local Canadian site with dedicated channels with content from the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and Sony BMG Canada.

Chad Hurley, CEO and Youtube co-founder, said in a statement that the YouTube.ca site aims to spotlight home-grown Canadian content via a local interface.

"Our goal is to satisfy the unique needs of the local users and to further strengthen Canada's vibrant YouTube community," he said.

YouTube also signed content deals with a number of Canadian partners, including the CBC, the Canadian Football League, Dose.ca (a Web site owned and operated by domestic broadcaster CanWest Global Communications) and Sony BMG Canada.
