'Cannabis' weeds out two leads

Chris Marquette, Cam Gigandet join true story

By Borys Kit and Gregg Goldstein

June 12, 2008, 01:00 AM ET

Chris Marquette and Cam Gigandet are starring in "Kid Cannabis," the true tale of Idaho suburbanites who built a multimillion-dollar marijuana ring. It is being directed by John Stockwell.

Marquette plays the title character and Gigandet is his best friend, running marijuana from Canada into Idaho and making a killing. The feds eventually are alerted to the scheme, and the two realize they might be in over their heads.

Aaron Yoo ("21") also has been cast.

Stockwell wrote the script, which adapts several articles on the subject, including a Rolling Stone piece titled "Kid Cannabis: How a Chubby Pizza-Delivery Boy From Idaho Became a Drug Kingpin." Stockwell is producing with Nicole Rocklin, Ross Dinerstein and Bobby Schwartz.

A July 14 start date in Vancouver is being eyed.

Marquette, repped by UTA and the Collective, next appears in Disney's "Race to Witch Mountain."

Gigandet, repped by Endeavor and Luber Rocklin Entertainment, was one of the stars of "Never Back Down" and next appears in "Twilight."

Borys Kit reported from Los Angeles; Gregg Goldstein reported from New York.
