'Wendy' lands at Oscilloscope

Beastie Boy's company picks up North American rights

NEW YORK -- Oscilloscope Pictures, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch's startup film company, has made its highest-profile acquisition, picking up North American rights to the Michelle Williams-toplined Cannes film "Wendy and Lucy."

The company, a hybrid outfit encompassing production and distribution, plans on a limited New York release in New York for the Un Certain Regard film, with a national rollout to follow in 2009.

The movie is an atmospheric take on working-class America, with Wendy (Williams) encountering and struggling with poverty in an Oregon town as she travels to find a better life in Alaska. The film uses the conceit of a missing dog to propel Wendy's journey.

"Wendy" is directed by Kelly Reichardt from a script she wrote with Jon Raymond, on whose short story the screenplay is based. The pair also teamed for the 2006 indie darling "Old Joy."

Oscilloscope, which Yauch founded with ThinkFilm vet David Fenkel, aims to produce and release an eclectic array of films. "We're trying to play it by ear," Yauch said. "We don't want to be locked into just narrative or docs or foreign or domestic."

The company has picked up the water documentary "Flow" and the music film "Gunnin' for that #1 Spot."

Fenkel negotiated the "Wendy" deal with Tanja Meissner of Memento Films International, Neil Kopp and filmscience's Anish Savjani.
