'The Leaves' falls to Summit

Kevin J. Walsh will adapt the Virgin Comics title for film

Summit Entertainment has acquired the feature film rights to the Virgin Comics graphic novel "The Leaves," written by Kevin J. Walsh and illustrated by Ashwin Chikerur.

The screenplay for the film will be adapted by Walsh, who is repped by CAA.

Gotham Chopra, Virgin's founder, COO and editor-in-chief, will produce along with CEO Sharad Devarajan.

"Leaves" centers on a New York doctor who travels to Bombay for a friend's funeral only to discover a prophecy that foretells that he will bring about the apocalypse. Anticipating that Customs might frown on that kind of declaration, the doctor goes on the run.

"It seems as if Summit is fated to work on this movie with Gotham and Virgin Comics," said Summit president of production Erik Feig, who will oversee the film with his vp, Jean Song. "Never have we seen a more innovative and visual setting for a whip-smart action thriller."

The "Leaves" comic is the third stand-alone series in Virgin's Asura Analogues, stories based on the Asura demons common in eastern Hindu and Buddhist mythology.

"Mining the great mysteries and mythologies of India and nurturing them into fresh films for the world to see has become what we're known for at Virgin Comics," Chopra said.

Jay A. Fernandez reported from Los Angeles; Steven Zeitchik reported from New York.
