Cannes a matter of course for Scorsese

PARIS -- Oscar winner Martin Scorsese will present a Masterclass at the 60th annual Festival de Cannes, organizers said Wednesday.

The director, winner of the Palme d'Or in 1976 for "Taxi Driver" and jury president in 1998, will return to Cannes to teach the class for students and film buffs on Thursday, May 24, following in the footsteps of previous guests of honor Stephen Frears, Nanni Moretti, Wong Kar Wai and Sydney Pollack.

Scorsese, who took home the best director and best film nods at the Oscars in February for "The Departed," also is scheduled to present the Camera d'Or to the director of the best first film In Competition during the festival's closing ceremony.

Scorsese additionally plans to use his festival visit to officially announce the launch of his World Cinema Foundation, devoted to the preservation and restoration of cinematic masterpieces from across the globe.
