Sony Pictures Animation and comics giant Platinum Studios have joined forces to produce a new animated feature from Platinum's 5,600-character library.

Platinum licenses its stable of characters and comics for both TV and feature products. It has "Atlantis Rising" in development at DreamWorks, with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci ("Transformers") producing, and "Cowboys and Aliens" at DreamWorks, with Kurtzman and Orci producing with Universal and Imagine Entertainment and Robert Downey Jr. attached to star.

Sony and Platinum CEO Scott Mitchell Rosenberg also collaborated on "Men in Black."

"I have known and respected Scott Rosenberg for many years as a great resource of characters, stories and ideas," said Bob Osher, president of Sony Pictures Digital Prods. "We're looking forward to working with him and Platinum Studios to develop a feature from their library of stories and characters."

Upcoming projects for SPA, which is run by production president Hannah Minghella, include "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," "Hotel Transylvania" and "The Smurfs."

Sony Pictures Animation produced the films "Open Season" and "Surf's Up" and the direct-to-DVD sequel "Open Season 2."
