The Vine: Weinstein Co., WGA dealing

In the wake of Monday's United Artists pact with the WGA, the
Weinstein Co. looks to be following suit. A source said the WGA
provided Bob and Harvey Weinstein with a copy of a proposal similar
to what was offered over the holidays to UA. The two have spent the
past several days reviewing it, the source said, and a deal "could
be imminent." Meanwhile, the folks over at UA have been burning the
midnight oil since inking their deal with the WGA. The first of its
kind for a film company, the pact has allowed UA to resume script
development and carry out any needed revisions on projects already
in development. As a result, the company led by Paula Wagner and
Tom Cruise has been inundated with scripts -- a number described as
"staggering" by one insider -- and has received a groundswell of
support from the artistic community. It also has taken criticism
from some studio executives, who accuse UA of breaking ranks with
the producers.
