Producer Anthony Bregman is teaming with comic writers Jay Reiss and Ian Helfer for the comedic drama "Oranges."

The project, which a number of directors are circling, focuses on a man who has a romantic relationship with the daughter of a family friend, turning the lives of the man and the family upside down. Bregman ("Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind") will produce via his A Likely Story banner.

One person familiar with the project called it " 'American Beauty' if 'American Beauty' had more comedy."

Financing is being finalized, with A Likely Story in negotiations with Media Rights Capital as well as several other potential entities to fund the picture.

The CAA-repped Reiss and the Gersh-repped Helfer have a number of comic projects in development. Reiss is on tap to write "Man-Witch" for Todd Phillips and Warner Bros., while Helfer has worked with "Wet Hot American Summer" director David Wain and wrote for John Hamburg's television pilot "Welcome to the Captain."

A Likely Story most recently produced "Synecdoche, New York," Charlie Kaufman's acclaimed directorial debut that opens this weekend. It is also behind Nicole Holofcener's untitled Catherine Keener-starrer about family and real estate for Sony Pictures Classics.
