NEW YORK -- The French might love Woody Allen more than anyone, but it's the Spanish who are putting their money where their mouth is. Spain-based producer-distributor Mediapro has signed a pact to finance and co-produce three Allen films during a three-year period beginning in 2009. His sister Letty Aronson's Gravier Prods. also will produce. Before the deal begins, Allen will return to New York to shoot his next project, an untitled Wild Bunch-funded feature that begins filming in the spring. The news comes on the heels of the Weinstein Co. picking up North American rights to Allen's romantic comedy-drama "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," shot in Spain and financed and co-produced by Mediapro. Allen has frequently admitted that most of his films have performed poorly ("Cassandra's Dream" being the most recent example), but low boxoffice receipts have not stopped him from getting new financing. In recent years, Allen often has gone (and filmed) where the money is, traveling from his New York home base to the U.K. for the BBC Films productions "Match Point" and "Scoop" and to Spain for "Barcelona." No shooting locations for the Mediapro projects have been determined The deal was negotiated by Mediapro's Jaume Roures and Javier Mendez with Allen's longtime producers Aronson and Stephen Tenenbaum.
