NEW YORK -- Two foreign language Toronto fest premieres have nabbed
North American deals: Prachya Pinkaew's Thai martial arts flick
"Chocolate" and Bohdan Slama's Czech drama "The Country
Teacher."
Magnolia Pictures' genre arm Magnet will release "Chocolate," the story of an autistic girl (newcomer Jeeja Vismistananda) who learns martial arts to track down thugs that owe her ailing mother money. The recent Fantastic Fest entry from Pinkaew ("Ong Bak") will hit theaters next year. Film Movement will distribute another 2009 release, "Teacher." It follows the title character, whose friendship with a woman and her troubled 17-year-old son sets off a chain of unsettling events. Sahamongkolfilm International's Gilbert Lim repped the "Chocolate" filmmakers, and Wild Bunch's Laurent Baudens repped the "Teacher" filmmakers in their deals.
