DreamWorks has acquired the film rights to the best-selling
children's book series "Children of the Lamp."
Nina Jacobson will produce through her DreamWorks-based shingle, and Oscar-nominated scribe Lee Hall ("Billy Elliot") has signed on to pen the screenplay. The "Lamp" novels were written by British author P.B. Kerr and include three titles, with a fourth due in September. The books chronicle the international adventures of a family of djinn, or genies, who pass for human but have the power to grant wishes. "I couldn't have asked for a more perfect project at DreamWorks than 'Children of the Lamp,' " Jacobson said. "My kids and I read the first book for fun and fell in love with Kerr's premise, characters and sense of humor." Jacobson, the former Walt Disney Motion Pictures Group topper, set up her first post-Disney project last week at DreamWorks: the sci-fi thriller "Dominion" (HR 6/15).
