Kanye West, MTV have surprises for vets

Their 'Choose or Lose' campaign centers on soldiers

By Mariel Concepcion, Billboard

July 23, 2008, 08:00 PM ET

Kanye West has teamed with MTV for the documentary "Choose or Lose & Kanye West Present: Homecoming," the next installment of the "Choose or Lose" campaign that tells the stories of war veterans and the difficulties they face when they return home.

In the one-hour special, West and MTV host Sway Calloway pay surprise visits to recently returned veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. In addition, West and Calloway give each veteran a gift, which consists of either having their debts paid off, rents taken care of or tuitions funded on behalf of MTV and the Dr. Donda West Foundation.

"I know my music inspires and helps a lot of people, but you can always do more," West said via a statement. "I teamed up with MTV and took the opportunity to share the spotlight with these veterans and hear their stories. I went to their homes to listen and get their firsthand experiences. I wanted to hear their stories."
