Sept 23, 2008, ET

Veteran French singer and songwriter Charles Aznavour will be presented with a lifetime achievement award at the 2009 MIDEM international music market in Cannes on Jan. 19. The event runs Jan. 18 to 21.

The 84-year-old music legend has written more than 800 songs and his works have been interpreted by artists including Fred Astaire, Ray Charles, Elvis Costello, Liza Minnelli and Nina Simone. His acting career includes more than 60 films.

Aznavour is currently on a farewell tour of Latin America, which has included performances in Argentina, Brazil and Chile. The EMI recording artist will also release a new album, "Duos", later this year featuring duets of some of his best known songs with an international line-up including Paul Anka, Celine Dion, Placido Domingo, Bryan Ferry, Josh Groban, Sir Elton John, Carole King, Liza Minnelli and Sting.

"Charles Aznavour is without doubt the most famous French singer throughout the world, and he is a living legend in the pantheon of chanson francaise," said Reed MIDEM CEO Paul Zilk in a statement. "His songs have become standards covered by some of the greatest artists of successive generations, and the films in which he has starred are classics. It is a pleasure for MIDEM to be able to honour this incomparable personality."

It has also been confirmed that Google VP content partnerships David Eun will deliver a keynote speech at MidemNet, the international forum that focuses on the music business in the digital age. MidemNet takes place on Jan. 17-18 in Cannes as part of MIDEM.
