Leading editing-system manufacturer Avid Technology is quietly
researching technology that would support editors of 3-D
stereoscopic features.
Some filmmakers already working in the 3-D arena have identified editorial as an area in need of urgent development. Avid has been working with several customers on prototype 3-D tools. This includes tools for its MetaFuse transcoding application, with which an editor would cut 2-D but the media files would contain information for both eyes in an “over and under” method, and a Media Composer command allowing an editor to indicate 3-D output. Avid also is researching a way to allow an editor to see 3-D on a 3-D display system while cutting, as well as a method of providing 3-D support in its Avid DS Nitris conforming system. Early technology demonstrations will be held today at a private Avid customer event in Los Angeles. In late 2007, Avid made a decision to pull out of the National Association of Broadcasters Show, choosing to redirect resources toward more “customer-focused” initiatives. Avid also is hosting some customer events at the NAB exhibition, which begins Friday in Las Vegas. It is not planning to present its 3-D research. Avid researches 3-D editing toolsApril 7, 2008, ET
