Moviegoers rushed to get a taste of the apocalypse Friday as Sony's
mega-disaster movie
"2012" opened to an estimated $23.7 million
in North
America.
Roland Emmerich's PG-13 movie, which bowed in 3,404 engagements, mirrored the $23.5 million opening of his 2004 picture "The Day After Tomorrow," which went on to gross $68.7 million over its first three days, which were part of a longer, four-day Memorial Day weekend. But not everyone sought out escapism. On the specialty front, Lee Daniels' "Precious," which opened in limited engagements in four cities last weekend, made an impressive push into 174 theaters, where it picked up about $1.952 million for the day. The put the Lionsgate release in a battle for third place with Overture's "The Men Who Stare at Goats," which attracted $1.949 million. Meanwhile, Focus Features' British rock comedy "Pirate Radio" docked in 11th place, with $886,000 from 882 locations. Elsewhere, Disney saw some added holiday cheer from "Disney's A Christmas Carol." Showing a good hold, the film fell by just 38% as it took in $5.6 million. Rounding out the top five, Universal's second weekend of the horror thriller "The Fourth Kind" picked up $1.8 million.
