Michael Giacchino is on Oscar duty

Composer will direct live orchestra at ceremony

Continuing to draft new talent for the 81st Academy Awards telecast, producer Laurence Mark and exec producer Bill Condon have named composer Michael Giacchino as the show's musical director.

Giacchino, who will be conducting the live orchestra for the first time, was nominated last year in the best original score category for "Ratatouille." His credits also include "Speed Racer," "Mission: Impossible III," "The Family Stone" and "The Incredibles," and he is composting and conducting scores for the upcoming "Star Trek," "Land of the Lost" and "Up." In 2005, he won an Emmy for his work on "Lost."

The awards show is set to take place Feb. 22 at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland.
