NEW YORK -- America Ferrera and Melissa Leo will star in "American Tragic," a post-Iraq War drama from Latino film producer Maya Entertainment.

Ferrera will exec produce writer-director Ryan Piers Williams' story of a young soldier (Ryan O'Nan) who has trouble re-adjusting when he returns to his small hometown. He leaves his wife, mother and sister (Ferrera, Leo and June Diane Raphael) to travel the country in search of redemption.

Heather Rae ("Frozen River") will produce the tentatively titled "Tragic" with exec producer Sergio Aguero ("Y Tu Mama Tambien"). Ferrera's Take Fountain Prods. will receive production credit. Principal photography is set for a February start in New Mexico.

Maya, a new production and distribution outfit targeting the U.S. Latino market, recently released the Ferrera project "How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer."

"When our production team (and) Heather described the film and told me America was on board, it took us all of one day to fast track the film into development and pre-production," said Maya COO Jeff Gonzalez.
