SYDNEY -- HBO is teaming with the Australian Broadcasting Corp. to
co-produce "Angry Boys," a 12-episode series from Australian
comedian Chris Lilley, the creator of hit mockumentary series
"Summer Heights High" and "We Can Be Heroes."
The project, which also will air on the BBC, marks the first time HBO has co-produced a show with Australian partners. It's also the first Aussie comedy series picked up by international broadcasters ahead of production. HBO, ABC and Lilley got in business last year when HBO acquired eight episodes of the critically praised "Summer." (The series, created, written and performed by Lilley, also ran on the BBC.) Exploring what it means to be a 21st century boy by putting males under the microscope, "Angry Boys" will be made in Lilley's signature mock documentary style, with Lilley again expected to play a range of characters. It starts production in Australia on Oct. 5 and will be shot in several overseas locations. "Angry Boys" will be produced by Lilley and partner Laura Waters through their Princess Pictures shingle. "Summer" was a ratings smash in Australia during its 2007 run on ABC, reaching a peak audience of 1.5 million and a 33.5% share. It has been sold in dozens of territories.
