Alex Graves has signed on to direct "Fringe," Fox's high-profile
pilot from J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
Graves also will executive produce the two-hour pilot, which Abrams' Bad Robot is producing with Warner Bros. TV. "Fringe" centers on a young female FBI agent who, forced to confront the spread of powerful and unexplained phenomena, must work with an institutionalized scientist whose life's work might be at the center of the coming storm. After a heated bidding, the sci-fi spec by Abrams, Kurtzman and Orci landed at Fox last month with a big series commitment (HR 10/5). Sources said the deal includes a budget for the pilot of about $10 million, which is in the ballpark of Abrams' two-hour pilot for ABC's "Lost." Graves was an executive producer on NBC's "The West Wing," which earned him two Emmys for best drama series along with multiple nominations for directing. More recently, he served as executive producer and director last season on ABC's "The Nine" and in the same capacity this season on NBC's freshman drama "Journeyman."
