MONTREAL -- Mo Mandel and Trevor Boris were among the standouts at
the second "New Faces" showcases at the Just for Laughs comedy
festival here Thursday night.
Industry observers also lauded the performances of Nate Bargatze and Anjelah Johnson on the show featuring up-and-coming standups. Hosted by Dana Gould, the show drew — as it traditionally does — a big crowd of managers, agents, network executives and comedy fans. Industry folks gave the showcase good grades for the overall quality of its performers. Boris drew laughs with jokes about his gay farmer life ("I drive a John Queer") and working at the lost and found of an airport. Mandel, among other things, had audiences in stitches with bits about his family, high gas prices, Nascar and Jewish girlfriends. Johnson's youthful energy and jokes about how men of different ethnicities hit on women differently also earned her positive reviews. And Bargatze pointed with material about non-monkey DNA, WalMart and mom-and-pop stores. Meanwhile, several sources mentioned a racial profiling joke ("(In LA) I saw two white cops pull over two black cops...") by "New Face" Kenny Johnson as a standout of the evening. Also Thursday night, JFL's popular music comedy show Amp'd welcomed a special guest in Judd Apatow, according to attendees.
