Meet the CW's young parents

Trio tapped to star in 'Light Years' pilot

Shiri Appleby, Kristoffer Polaha and Kerr Smith have been tapped to star in the CW's hourlong pilot "Light Years" for CBS Par and director Gary Fleder.

The Liz Tigelaar-penned dramedy centers on foster kid Lux (Brittany Robertson) who, on her 16th birthday, tracks down her slacker biological father, bar owner Nick "Baze" Basile (Polaha), and her mother, morning radio host Cate Campbell (Appleby), who haven't spoken since high school when their one-night stand resulted in pregnancy.

Smith plays Ryan, Campbell's boyfriend and co-host on the show.

This is the first mother role for Appleby, who just turned 30 and mostly has played ingenues or vixens. Her age difference with Robertson is a little more than 11 years. Polaha is 31.

Like its predecessor the WB, the CW tends to go unrealistically young in the motherly department. Lauren Graham was barely 33 when she was cast as the mom of a teenage daughter in "Gilmore Girls," 14 1/2-years older than screen daughter Alexis Bledel.

The project marks a WB reunion for Appleby and Smith, who co-starred on the former network's "Roswell" and "Dawson's Creek," respectively.

Appleby, who recently starred in the USA Network's "To Love & Die," is repped by ICM and manager John Carrabino.

Polaha, who co-starred on the CW/MRC drama "Valentine," is repped by Endeavor. Smith, next seen in "My Bloody Valentine 3-D," is with Gersh and Thruline.
