LONDON -- Ex-CBC News editor in chief Tony Burman has been named managing director of Al Jazeera English, the Qatar-based sister channel to the Arabic news network.

He replaces Nigel Parsons, who has been promoted to managing director of business acquisitions and development.

Burman, formerly editor and chief executive director of Canadian Broadcasting Corp.'s news division, is also an award-winning documentary producer.

Launched in November 2006, Al Jazeera English is available to more than 100 million households worldwide.
