NBC wins Wed. with 'Loser' finale

NEW YORK -- "The Biggest Loser" finale and a higher-than-average "Medium" gave a primetime win in adults 18-49 to NBC by a whisker over CBS, whose seasoned Wednesday lineup overwhelmingly won in viewership.

"Biggest Loser" won each half hour of its two-hour finale in adults 18-49 between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. by wide margins, according to data released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research. Its peak was a 5.6 rating/14 share in the demo between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., ahead of the last half hour of "Criminal Minds" (5.1/13).

"Biggest Loser" averaged 11.7 million viewers and a 4.8 rating/13 share in adults 18-49, according to preliminary estimates by Nielsen Media Research. It was the show's highest rating of the season but dropped 28% compared to last fall's "Biggest Loser" finale. "Biggest Loser" just missed out on being the night's top show in the demo.

Also lower than usual was "CSI: NY" (15.8 million, 4.9/14), which still was the night's top show in adults 18-49. "Criminal Minds" (16.1 million, 4.7/12), also on CBS, was the night's top show in viewership.

Between the final hour of "Biggest Loser" and "Criminal Minds," there wasn't much light left for ABC's "Daybreak" (3.9 million, 1.4/4). It was the lowest rating since its debut Nov. 15 and declined 44% from its season-to-date average of 2.5/7. Even Fox's repeat "Bones" (6.1 million, 2.3/6) beat it.

CBS' "The King of Queens" averaged 9 million viewers and a 3.2/9 in the demo, just about in line with last week in the hour. The same couldn't be said for ABC's "Show Me The Money" (6.3 million, 1.6/5) which hasn't shown the ratings: Wednesday was its lowest rating so far.

ABC's bad luck continued at 10 p.m., where "Primetime: Basic Instincts" (4.3 million, 1.8/5) dropped 33% compared to its first episode last week. NBC's "Medium" averaged 10 million and a 3.7/10 in the demo, its highest rating so far this season.

Nightly averages: ABC (4.9 million, 1.6/4); CBS (13.6 million, 4.3/12); NBC (11.1 million, 4.4/12); Fox (7.4 million, 2.6/7); and The CW (2.1 million, 1.0/3).
