Site aims to be Force for 'Star Wars' fans

By Carly Mayberry

May 25, 2007, ET

"Star Wars" fans clamoring to celebrate the film's 30th anniversary have new online tools for self-expression with today's relaunch of StarWars.com.

Visitors to the site will find greater interactive capability with fans as well as a new ability to create video mashups with an online editing tool provided by video application company Eyespot.

Through the new feature, users can incorporate personal video with music and footage from more than 250 scenes drawn from all six films.

"Since 1977, 'Star Wars' has been built on the idea that our fans are the reason we have been successful, and they have long shown their enormous creativity and desire to have fun and express themselves through Star Wars," said Jeff Ulin, senior director of distribution and online at Lucasfilm Ltd. "Our new site brings our fans innovative tools like the Eyespot editor that let them do just that in exciting new ways."

The site's revamp also includes the addition of hundreds of user-generated "Star Wars" videos from across the Web, five years' worth of "Star Wars" fan movie festival shorts co-presented by AtomFilms.com and a showcase of mini-documentaries exploring the creation of the "Star Wars" saga.

The relaunch marks the beginning of additional features to be added in coming months, including content, games and interactive ways for its users to communicate.
